Daniil Medvedev to play for Indian team PBG Eagles in 2023 WTL Season

In a significant announcement for tennis enthusiasts worldwide, the 2021 US Open champion, Daniil Medvedev, is set to headline the second season of the World Tennis League (WTL) as part of the Indian team ‘PBG Eagles.’ The highly anticipated event, slated to kick off on December 21 and conclude on December 24, will witness an assemblage of elite tennis talent at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena on Yas Island.

Medvedev, hailing from Russia, will be teaming up with compatriot Andrey Rublev for the year-ending extravaganza, which promises exhilarating matches and fierce competition among 16 of the world’s top tennis stars.

The Indian team, PBG Eagles, under the ownership of the Punit Balan Group, has secured a prominent position in the WTL, marking the conglomerate’s expansion into the global tennis landscape. Notably, the Punit Balan Group already commands ownership of nine teams across various sports leagues, signaling their dedication to fostering a diverse sporting portfolio.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming season, Medvedev shared his delight in returning to the UAE, a location he holds dear, aiming to culminate the year on a positive note amid high-stakes competition.

Chairman & Managing Director of PBG, Punit Balan, emphasized the group’s commitment to success in this venture, affirming their eagerness to participate in the WTL and their aspiration to clinch the championship title. Balan highlighted the PBG’s successful endeavors in other sporting disciplines, illustrating their focus on delivering top-tier competition and vying for the ultimate accolade.

The WTL format is structured around four teams, each comprising four players engaged in men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. The culmination of this thrilling tournament will witness the top two teams contending for the title on December 24, promising an electrifying finale to the season.

Notably, the WTL’s lineup will feature renowned players such as women’s World number one Aryna Sabalenka, Australian Open finalist Stefano Tsitsipas, and four-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek, adding further excitement and anticipation to the event.

The convergence of top-tier talent, the anticipation of Medvedev’s participation, and the spirited competition expected at the World Tennis League’s second season have tennis enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the enthralling battles set to unfold on the courts of Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena.
